Ari Aster, USA 2018, 127’
American Honey Midsommar – Director’s Cut

In his first full-length feature film Ari Aster proves that best horror often means simple horror - after all, an old house and members of a slightly dysfunctional family are enough to scare someone. Appropriately for a film that begins with a obituary scene, the main focus of  Hereditary is mourning and strange forms it can take - at least among the Grahams, as they are trying to cope with the death of their grandmother, whom, as it turns out pretty soon, no one really knew. Neither did her daughter, reconstructing in miniature increasingly tragic events happening in her family, let alone her grandchildren - teenage Peter and little Charlie. With the help of Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne in their best performances in years, as well as perfect shots by his long-time Polish operator Paweł Pogorzelski, Aster shows he can play with the big boys of Hollywood, meanwhile making the viewers jump nervously in their seats. "Rest in peace?" Not this time.
