The Sparks Brothers

Edgar Wright, UK, USA 2021, 141’
Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain

Do you know The Sparks Brothers? You don’t? You are not alone. How is that possible then that for a whole bunch of celebrities invited by Egdar Wright to speak on tribute movie, The Sparks are the most influential band ever? Björk and Duran Duran and Beck as well as actors, Fred Armisen or Jason Schwartzman, literally everybody and their cousin, cite the names of Ron and Russell Mael, 75 and 72-years old musicians respectively, known as The Sparks Brothers as their inspiration. In fact, we probably know their music too – The Sparks have recorded 25 albums, in genres ranging from glam-rock to progressive to disco to techno. And we have seen the often-copied type of duo before and after: a singing handsome one and a silent one on keyboard. The documentary – luckily far from a much-repeated type of sex, drugs and rock-and-roll drama – comes in a perfect moment as a detailed reply to an unavoidable question this season: Do you know the guys who made the soundtrack of Leos Carax’s  Annette
