Maggie Gyllenhaal (unforgettable Lee in Secretary) makes her directorial debut and immediately wins Best Script in Venice. In an unsettling story based on the novel by Elena Ferrante, author of My Brilliant Friend, Gyllenhaal shows a woman who fails to find fulfillment in motherhood. Leda (Olivia Colman), named after Yeats's poem, comes on vacation. Instead of resting, however, she prefers to watch a young mother (Dakota Johnson), her daughter and her bizarre, aggressive family living in a pink villa and terrorizing the entire town. Leda understands what the object of his fascination is going through - many years ago she had to fight for survival in her own home, where her daughters demanded her full attention while her husband was focused on his own career. Children are an overwhelming responsibility, she tells the woman expecting a baby and comforting words, while Gyllenhaal only turns up the tension.
