As every American teenager knows, going to prom can feel like a matter of life and death. For Sam (Pearce Joza), it’s more like walking a tightrope blindfolded. Living with epilepsy under the watchful eyes of his mother and grandfather, he navigates a world where even the smallest trigger like fatigue, flashing lights, a sudden rush of emotion can send everything spiraling. Though prom night ticks every box on the list of possible triggers, Sam is determined to break free, if only for a moment, from his well-meaning but overprotective mother (Lake Bell), and to spend time with Molly (a standout Tanzyn Crawford), the one friend who truly understands his situation. Winner of the 2024 PISF Award at US in Progress, Miles Levin’s debut is not only a sensitive coming-of-age story, but also a nuanced look at family relationships and dynamics. It reminds us that while every family battles its own demons, moments of tenderness, support, and connection can still shine through.
