A bittersweet twist on the classic Christmas movie, this warm-hearted comedy comes from Jay Duplass, familiar to AFF audiences alongside his brother Mark for their acting roles (Your Sister’s Sister, 2nd AFF), directorial efforts (Jeff, Who Lives at Home, 2nd AFF; Biosphere, 14th AFF), and countless producing collaborations. Cliff (Michael Strassner, who also co-wrote the script) is a good-natured goofball with what he believes to be a killer sense of humor. He can’t finish a sentence without turning it into a joke, and nearly everything he touches turns into comedy, whether he means it to or not. As is often the case, though, his constant joking is a mask for deeper troubles he hasn’t quite figured out how to face. Unexpected help arrives on Christmas Eve in the form of Didi, a dentist he meets under peculiar circumstances, with whom he ends up spending the holiday. In this disarming comedy, you’ll find all the hallmarks of a Duplass film: a gallery of oddball, slightly awkward characters, a delicate balance of sincerity and silliness, and flashes of genuine human connection that appear precisely when no one expects them.
