Eleni is 16 years old and has just uprooted her life, moving from California to Virginia, where she has to fit in at a new school. Yet, she quickly wins over her peers with an infectious passion. Taking the helm as president of the school’s rocket club, Eleni sets her sights on building the perfect model for a fiercely competitive contest featuring hundreds of teams from across the United States. Rocket Girl marks the striking feature-length documentary debut of Agnes Swiercz, a Polish visual artist based in New York whose work delves into the rich complexity of female experience and perspective. Her protagonist is determined and fiercely independent, fully conscious of stepping into a domain long dominated by men. Through her fascination with technology and space, Eleni embarks on a journey of self-discovery that transcends the laws of physics. What might seem like a straightforward tale of a girl pursuing her dream unfolds into a poignant story of inner maturation and embracing setbacks. The breathtaking visuals of rocket launches elevate the narrative, capturing Eleni’s determination while evoking a universal yearning to break free from the earthbound and glimpse life from a radically new vantage point.
Polish visual artist and film director based in New York, Agnes Swiercz co-directed the short documentary Woman Sought (2009) by Michał Marczak and co-wrote his feature documentary At the Edge of Russia (2010).
