Ben has everything a man his age could wish for. After eight hours at a fulfilling job, he comes home every day to a house he shares with his loving and caring wife, Anna. The couple is trying for a baby, eagerly anticipating the next chapter of their life together.
Their peaceful relationship is suddenly disrupted by an unexpected visit from Andrew, Ben’s college friend. Reuniting after years apart triggers a return to old, immature dynamics and toxic patterns of behavior between the two men. It all blows up when they decide— on a drunken whim—to make an amateur porn movie for a local film festival.
What starts as a drunken, spur-of-the-moment idea becomes something neither of them has the courage to back out of. The plan becomes a catalyst for a multilayered identity crisis and throws their previously clear life priorities into chaos.
Humpday is a sharp and insightful look from director Lynn Shelton, who closely observes the ways people hide behind confident smiles, the illusion of control, and macho posturing. Sensitive to the vulnerability of its characters and unflinching in exposing their emotional immaturity, Shelton’s film is a touching reflection on the struggles of modern masculinity.

A director, screenwriter, actress, editor, and producer from Cleveland, she was one of the most important figures in early-2000s American independent cinema. Alongside Andrew Bujalski, Joe Swanberg, and the Duplass brothers, she was an icon of the mumblecore movement, which combines a focus on contemporary human relationships with low-budget production and natural, often improvised dialogue. Her most recent feature film, Sword of Truth, entertained audiences during the 10th edition of AFF. She passed away in 2020.
