The filmography of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg documents one thing—their unwavering belief that it will all work out. Without that faith, they wouldn’t have been able to create This Is the End, perhaps the most uninhibited project they’ve made so far. Although their biblical, apocalyptic satire on the corruption of the film industry features attractions such as heavenly rays lifting the righteous to salvation, deadly fires and earthquakes, and a gigantic devil roaming Los Angeles with a several-meter-long appendage on display, the main focus is on self-mocking meta-commentary. It’s enough to say that dozens of stars populating the screen play… themselves.
What is the filmmakers’ goal? To throw a massive party, invite icons of contemporary pop culture, and then condemn them to eternal torment and suffering in the depths of hell. This wild genre massacre is both an expression of exhaustion with show business and proof that the creative duo from Canada remains continuously interested in personal, unique cinema. One thing is certain: if this truly is the end of American film comedy, then with its final moments it has earned an eternal carefree life.
