An adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Allen Drury, a conservative journalist with deep knowledge of Washington’s inner workings, who turned to writing political thrillers in the 1950s. Advise and Consent became the best-selling book of 1960, with fans ranging from John F. Kennedy to Richard Nixon.
As a gravely ill president (Franchot Tone) from an unnamed political party nominates Robert Leffingwell (Henry Fonda — who played a strikingly similar role that same year in The Best Man, featured in the Politics on Screen section at the 15th AFF) to be secretary of state, the Senate — tasked with offering “advice and consent” — must decide whether to confirm or reject the nomination. But is Leffingwell truly the best candidate to lead American diplomacy? And can a president, even in the name of national interest, act unethically?
Fun fact: both Martin Luther King Jr. and Richard Nixon were invited to appear in the film. They declined — but we do get Betty White, who plays a sharp, fearless senator with scene-stealing flair.
