Before The West Wing made him a household name, Aaron Sorkin penned the screenplay for Rob Reiner’s political dramedy that features a widowed president who falls for a professional lobbyist. But in the age of 24-hour news cycles and ruthless partisan politics, can the leader of the free world really have a personal life?
Fans of The West Wing will immediately recognize familiar faces as well as Sorkin’s signature flourishes: rapid-fire “walk and talk” dialogues in White House corridors shot in single takes, a distinct sense of humor, and, above all, an unabashedly idealistic, even naïve, take on the American political system.
Reiner’s movie is a throwback to a time when this vision of the presidency still felt possible. Today, it might provoke a chuckle, a groan, but maybe even pangs of longing.
