The Report

Scott Z. Burns, USA 2019, 119’
Polish premiere
The Lighthouse The Two Popes

A suspenseful political thriller that takes a behind-the-scenes look at some of the CIA’s controversial activities following the attacks on the World Trade Center. Everything starts, however, with one man. In this case, the whistleblower is Daniel Jones (Adam Driver), a young intern who is given the task of examining the situation and preparing a report on the issue for the U.S. Senate. It’s no easy task—he has to read and analyze tons of documents, photos, and recordings, most of which are classified or were even deliberately destroyed. It took Jones and his small team five long years to reach the truth, and the answers leave no doubt: So-called enhanced interrogation techniques provided virtually no benefit to the U.S. special services. Fast-paced action, terrific acting, and a very topical subject are the quintessence of this film by Scott Z. Burns, a man who has worked regularly with Steven Soderbergh. The Report is something like a horror written by Aaron Sorkin. Following its premiere at the Sundance Festival, Film Inquiry wrote that The Report reaffirms the notion that one person can still make a difference.
