Just Mercy

Destin Daniel Cretton, USA 2019, 136’
Polish premiere
Jojo Rabbit Knives Out

The incredibly talented trio of Michael B. Jordan, Brie Larson, and Jamie Foxx star in the story of a well-educated young lawyer named Bryan (Jordan) who, after graduating from Harvard, travels to Alabama to defend Walter (Foxx), a man wrongly sentenced to death. With the help of an activist named Eva (Larson) who is fighting to protect the rights of prisoners, he undertakes an unequal battle against everyone and everything: the system, the police, the local authorities, social attitudes, and even his own neighbors. It might seem like there have already been plenty of films with similar stories, with Joel Schumacher’s famous A Time to Kill and Alan Parker’s Mississippi Burning at the forefront. With performances of great intensity and depth, in roles and styles that are completely atypical for the lead actors, might, however, make Just Mercy an unexpected Oscar favorite this year, especially in the acting categories. Cretton’s film has everything you would expect from a strong candidate for awards season. IndieWire raved about Michael B. Jordan, praising his excellent form, while Consequence of Sound is predicting a long-awaited Oscar for Jamie Foxx.
