Jackie and Elliot (longtime friends Jess Weixler, who was pregnant during shooting, and the director Joshua Leonard) are about to become first-time parents in a month; however, despite trying to get everything ready under the supervision of an experienced midwife, even choosing the right car seat turns out to be to be more than they can handle. When, while opening gifts at their baby shower, they suddenly hear from their slightly too honest friends that, after the baby’s born, they’ll “never be themselves again,” they decide to experience as much as possible—while they still have time for it. By experimenting with sex, forcing their parents to make difficult confessions, and arguing over whether they have too much hummus in the refrigerator, they slowly begin to understand that their lives are going to change forever. At the same time, they repeat the words that every couple who decide to start a family and who are frightened by the prospect of repeating their parents’ mistakes has been saying for years to make themselves feel better: “It’s not going to happen to us.”
