Winners of the 9th American Film Festival in Wrocław Have Been Announced

8th US in Progress powered by Papaya Films Winners Announced The 10th American Film Festival has a new date. Movie submissions are open

This year's fabulous celebration of American cinema in Wroclaw is ending. During today's closing gala, we learned the winners of the 9th American Film Festival.

Traditionally, the festival audience voting for their favorite films was the festival jury. Out of the 12 features in the Spectrum section, the winner was The Hate U Give, directed by George Tillman Jr.

The Hate U Give is a cinematic manifesto and powerful commentary on racial prejudice in contemporary America. The film also presents the process of awakening social responsibility, and taking responsibility for others, including strangers. Amandla Stenberg stars as the lead along with Anthony Mackie, who proves that he is a much better actor than would be suggested by his portrayal of Falcon in the Avengers series.

Out of the 14 documentaries in the American Docs section, the audience rewarded Satan and Adam, directed by V. Scott Balcerek.

Satan and Adam is the unusual story of an even more extraordinary pair: an elderly, black eccentric and young white man who played together in a fiery blues duo on the streets of Harlem in the 1980s, a period of powerful racial tensions, who managed to play as if all divisions and conflicts were long gone.

The winning films received prizes of $10,000 (feature) and $5,000 (documentary), funded by BNY Mellon.

During the 9th AFF, viewers saw a total of 88 feature-length films, of which 57 were shown in Poland for the first time. Festival guests included Sara Driver and Alexandre Rockwell, who received the Indie Star Award in Wroclaw - an award honoring lifetime achievement in independent American cinema.

We hope to see you at the 10th American Film Festival in the autumn of 2019.
